Untraceable The Nature of Grace series S R Johannes Books

For a story that's pretty much outside of my comfort zone, I was surprised how hard it was to put it down. It's an interesting story with some thrilling moments and a strong female heroine. And what else would you want from a good story?

Graces' father disappears. But you can't simply vanish, there are always traces. She knows he's still alive and she's determined to find him even if everybody else thinks he's dead.
Mo has his own mission. As it happens fate joins their paths. But who is this mysterious boy and why does he live in the forest. Can Grace really trust him?

Grace is a strong-minded heroine. She notices things others had missed, finds new traces, discovers a mystery she really should stay away from. As things get more and more dangerous she manages to stay focused and still keeps going. No matter what others might think of her.

Obviously, she's not perfect. She's just a teenager without any kind of special training and she's diving into a dangerous mystery that might kill her. But simply can't stay away from danger. Well, I guess there would be no book if she could.

As it usually happens with teenagers - there comes love. This time, it's mix of the ex-boyfriend who tries to get her back and new-hot-British-guy. So yes, there's a triangle. But it's not so bad. The ex has pretty low chances of getting her back and even though he tries she still tries to stay away. The new guy is a mystery, though - she's unsure if she should simply throw herself into his arms. But he can be so adorable and romantic!

This book won't spare you some gruesome scenes with poachers and their victims. I really wanted to dive into the book and kicked their asses! How could people even THINK about doing these kinds of things? Horrible.

The mystery of Graces' father's disappearance is nicely crafted. At first, it's just that - one man vanishing without a reason. With time more and more interesting and scary details get discovered. More people are involved. Grace is surrounded by uncertainty. She doesn't know who will listen to her and who to trust.

Johannes's writing is magnetic, it will make you keep turning pages until you get to the very end. And even then it's not over. Although I would prefer if it was a stand-alone novel, but it ends with a bit of a cliffhanger. Well, it's not that bad since it gives hope, but I would still prefer a more definite ending.

Untraceable The Nature of Grace series S R Johannes Books Reviews

I'm starting to realize that some of the better books are in the YA category - more plot, less reliance on romance and sex! What a refreshing approach.
This book kept me guessing almost the whole time. I appreciated the fact that the "good guys" have flaws. Grace isn't perfect, but she is strong. Her relationship with her mother rings true, and so does her unwillingness to accept the fact of her father's death.
The author certainly did a lot of research to make this a good read. I am eagerly anticipating the next installment!
I hate giving bad reviews, especially to relatively unknown writers. I would have loved to give this book a good review but I just cannot do it. There are no spoilers in the following review...

I'm shocked by how many 4-5 star reviews it received. I wanted to like the book so much that I forgave the character (writer) for such inconsistency until I got through over half the book. But after one too many situations where the main characters does something so utterly idiotic, so completely inconsistent with the tough, intelligent survivor type that the writer keeps trying to portray, I had to speed-read haphazardly through the rest of the book to even finish it.

The reviewer who said that Grace was "a modern day Katniss" is insane. This girl was suppose to be strong and intelligent with impeccable survival skills stemmed from growing up in her Forrest Ranger dad's shadow, but in every single tense situation she found herself in, she completely failed on all accounts.

The author felt the need to throw the strongest traits down the toilet at every opportunity to move the storyline along, yet was compelled out of sheer necessity to keep reminding the readers that Grace was a survivor with awesome skills. If the writer had the character show strength and intelligence throughout the book, it would not have been necessary to remind us constantly of what type of character she was suppose to be.

I truly believe that the author's plot became the sole focus of the book, where she knew where she wanted the story to go (which wasn't anywhere great) and therefore needed Grace to "mess" up in ways that were fundamentally opposite to everything that the character stood for in order to get from one point to another. However, the plot was messy and connections were drawn everywhere without a whole lot of thought. There was a love trangle, Native American issues, animal rights, coping with loss, wilderness survival, fly fishing and secret undercover Forrest Rangers. The author jam packed all that into a messy plot that is unrealistic and confusing. However if the author had made the main character consistently makie intelligent decisions, consistently use her wilderness skills successfully and consistently stayed calm and cool under pressure, I would have given the book a higher review even with the horrendously messy plot.

I have only given a few of 1 star reviews so I do not do so lightly, read only if you feel up to continually redefining the main character at ever twist and turn.
