The Wanderer’s Last Journey The Orfeo Saga Book 4 eBook Murray Lee Eiland Jr

Orfeo and his friends are once again placed in the middle of a war. Only this war isn't on their home front but rather a mysterious tribe. This tribe have been awaiting the return of their ancient god for many centuries of him missing. When they become acquainted with Orfeo, they immediately believe he is their missing deity.

As the rest of the gang travel to rescue Orfeo, they are thrown in the middle of a Civil War amongst natives. Sides have been drawn and hell is about to break loose. The only question is, is this the end?

I have adored each and every book in this series. I sincerely hope it is not the end and the author comes back with more very soon! This one is by far my personal favorite that I couldn't help but read twice in the past couple days. It kept me on the edge both times and I'm still not over it now. Loved it all!

The Wanderer’s Last Journey The Orfeo Saga Book 4 eBook Murray Lee Eiland Jr Reviews

Tragedy and comedy can be mixed together to form a story that is light in places, and dark in others. The demise of a main character of a saga is a place of transition. The remaining heroes find that when they return back Sparta is determined to wage war. The author paints a really interesting picture in this book. Evil is not so much a state of badness, but one of ignorance and inflexibility. I had fun with this book and think other people will have fun too!
The Wanderer’s Last Journey is really two books in one. The first part involves the kidnapping of Orfeo. Clarice, Daryush, and of course Zurga set out to find him. Orfeo is kept in a “gilded cage” by a totally unscrupulous group of people from the New World. They control public access to “Quetzalcoatl” and are busy building up his mythology to maintain their control over their people (who are not surprisingly involved in a war with the neighboring group). While there is no actual evidence that contact between Old and New worlds took place so early, the historical setting is excellent for a story (although it is not really history). As the title suggests, Zurga does not return home. This is quite a sad moment. While in some ways he is the most interesting character, his methods (although not his knowledge accumulated over 9 decades) will continue to play a role in the saga. The heroes need all their skill and cunning in the second part of this book, which deals with the war between Pylos and Sparta. While Sparta is well known from the Classical period of Greek history, in the Bronze Age presented by the author they are rather overconfident. Even without Zurga, the big three who remain are more than a match for those who seek to conquer them. While books 1-3 very much form one story arc, book 4 starts what seems to be a new phase of the saga. While Daryush does not yet have the gravitas of Zurga, he may well mature into someone who is far more versatile than his teacher!
Orfeo gets kidnapped and put up as the incarnated God, Quetzalcoatl, in the land beyond the Great Ocean, by the corn-eating, cocaine-trading people. Clarice, Daryush, Semira, as well as Zurga joined forces to rescue Orfeo successfully, although at a critical moment the old mentor-friend Zurga sacrificed himself before the great trans-Atlantic escape homeward.
As they returned home, Daryush and his charming and devoted wife, Semira, found a home-spun tyrant, with whom they dealt with quite successfully. Similarly, Orfeo and his wife Clarice got enmeshed in a new international conflict with the Spartans, who were countered skillfully by the attacking force of Orfeo with the help of old Telemon as well as by the defensive force lead expertly by the ad-hoc general, beautiful and determined lady Clarice. Peace is temporary, but War is always, everywhere!
I was particularly attracted to the brief but serious "theological" conversation of Daryush with Avram and Lev in the beginning of Book IV, Chapter 3.

The Wanderer's Last JourneyIn The Wanderer’s Last Journey, the fourth volume of the young adult Orfeo Saga, Murray Lee Eiland, Jr., delivers an exciting, fast-paced historical fantasy that will no doubt please devoted fans of the series.

The Wanderer’s Last Journey opens with a burst of action. Traders from a foreign land have arrived Linnaeus’s kingdom, where Orfeo and Clarice are currently residing. Soon a scuffle ensues, during which Orfeo is taken captive. In order to get Orfeo back, Clarice has no choice but to send for Daryush, the Kassite. She and Semria, Daryush’s wife, join Daryush on the quest when he arrives at court. Soon, Zurga joins the search as well. He first looks for clues first at home and then travels to Egypt. There, he learns that foreigners from across the sea have kidnapped Orfeo; he soon enlists a crew to go and rescue Orfeo.

Meanwhile, on the ship, Orfeo is treated respectfully, yet he still has no idea why he has been taken. After thirty-four days at sea, he arrives to what appears to be the New World, and is treated as a god; yet that does not stop him from planning his escape. But that too quickly turns out to be a ruse Orfeo has been taken by the King of Ixtlan.

The ships that sought out to find Orfeo—Zurga’s and Daryush’s—each endure rough seas, little information, and mutinous crews to find the much beloved and sorely missed Orfeo. They meet in the kingdom of Nastase, and immediately set out to find Orfeo. Yet reaching the temple where Orfeo is being kept, they turn to find that someone has set their ship on fire.

With Orfeo reunited with his beloved Clarice, as well as her companions, the group begins to plan their escape. Alternating chapters reveal that the Kings of Nastase and Ixtlan are working together to recapture Orfeo. But their internal strife brews over into a civil war, and thus allows Orfeo, Clarice, and their companions to escape the confines of the castle and board nearby ships. Unfortunately Zurga, fighting valiantly and heroically, is killed in the process.

After a somewhat hostile journey, the group returns home safely, and is greeted by King Linneaus and Orfeo’s elderly mother, Hermia. They bury Zurga in great solemnity and honor.

With Orfeo and Clarice safely home, Daryush and Semira travel back to their homeland where they encounter adventures of their own. After deposing a mad King, the pair assumes their rightful seats of power.

The scene then shifts back to Orfeo and Clarice at Pylos. As in all adventure stories, peace and tranquility have been short-lived, and a minor war with neighboring Sparta soon erupts. But the heroes defend Pylos with strength and bravery, and the Spartans are forced to retreat. But while all seems well, an ominous cliffhanger leaves the reader anxiously awaiting the next volume in the series.

While The Wanderer’s Last Journey is at times confusing in its transitions between characters and various adventures, it provides a pleasant read for devoted fans of the series and readers of young adult historical fantasy.
